The robot is a critical piece of equipment that uses a minimally invasive surgical approach, the introduction of which was a major step towards transforming cancer service within Wales. This pioneering service ensures that treatment for Welsh patients with operable tumours will be revolutionised as they will have access to the most advanced, up to date and innovative cancer treatments in multiple cancer specialties. The urology service at Cardiff & Vale UHB provides centralised cancer care to 400 prostate and kidney cancer patients every year.     A successful Health Technology Fund (HTF) bid was approved by the Welsh Government in June 2013 in order to implement robotic surgery for minimally invasive treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer in South Wales. The da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery System was procured by Cardiff and Vale UHB in 2014 and at the time was the most advanced robotic surgery system in the world. The robot is a critical piece of equipment that uses a minimally invasive surgical approach, the introduction of which was a major step towards transforming cancer service within Wales.
