Up to 5 tonnes of lead may have been deposited when Ballynahone was used as a clay pigeon shooting range between 1966 and 1986 (EHS 2004). Ulster Wildlife requires a contractor to trim adjacent wooded vegetation to allow access of machinery to the contaminated area; excavation of the peat and removal, treatment and safe disposal of contaminants; installation of peat contour bunds and levelling of the area to <0.5% to leave the area suitable for restoration and active peat formation.
