Coverage: 69 active published awards; 0 bid reports (which may be per lot). Supplier values exclude multi-supplier awards, frameworks and DPS, and use GBP only. They are published award values, not payments. Published-to-award variance compares single-lot, single-award, single-supplier GBP procedures with explicitly non-framework/non-DPS status; increases remain in the average. Unpublished data stays unknown. Awarded suppliers are winners, not all bidders.

Procedure rationaleEmbryo culture media is a critical component of the IVF process, with a direct impact on embryo development, clinical pregnancy rates, and potentially the long-term health outcomes of resulting offspring. Any change in culture media therefore represents a significant clinical decision with inherent risk. It is not feasible to conduct a tandem trial using multiple media products concurrently within our service. Such an approach would require formal ethical approval and would introduce substantial complexity into routine clinical practice. Furthermore, any transition between media systems would necessarily affect all patients undergoing treatment during that period, thereby exposing them to potential variability in outcomes. While retrospective analysis could be undertaken to evaluate the impact of a change on key performance indicators, this would only be possible after implementation, at which point any negative effects on patient outcomes would already have occurred. In addition, EmbryoScope time-lapse incubators require the use of EmbryoScope-specific culture dishes (slides), which are the only compatible consumables for this equipment. This creates a technical dependency that further limits the ability to consider alternative suppliers. For these reasons, this direct award is justified under Section 41 of the Procurement Act 2023, relying on Schedule 5, paragraph 6 (single supplier: technical reasons). The requirement can only be supplied by a particular supplier due to technical compatibility and the absence of reasonable alternatives. A change in supplier would result in incompatibility and/or disproportionate clinical and operational risk.
