NHS Wales Trust have been running an online service for self-sampling for STI’s since 2018 and will eventually expand to an All Wales Agreement. Public Health Wales laboratories previously supported the expansion which has been agreed by Welsh Government. However, during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, Public Health Wales laboratories were suspended for the use of STI sampling to support the national testing campaign. Therefore in order to enable the provision of STI testing and to continue the patient online service for self-sampling, Public Health Wales awarded a contract to HSL Pathology Lab to continue the testing in private laboratories during the height of the pandemic. However, now that the cases associated with the Covid-19 pandemic are rising further and the Public Health Wales laboratories are overwhelmed with Covid-19 testing, the service are awarding an extension contract to HSL Pathology Lab.
